Identity (gender/race)

From looking at gender differences in my chosen film, The Inbetweeners, we clearly see that gender is represented in different ways. A shot from the film I have looked at is where the four teenagers are in Malia and they go out on streets to have fun, in this shot we see the four teenagers walking towards the camera with a long angle shot which establishes the setting and the girls around on streets. Looking at the female gender represented in this scene we see the female characters in revealing clothing dancing around to the music, which represents them as sexual objects.
Laura Mulvey's theory argues that, "women in mainstream narrative film are subject to two modes of structural treatment and obsession. First, they are presented for the pleasure of the spectator, which implies a privilege of the masculine 'gaze'. ". "Secondly, women are often the objects of narrative investigation, sometimes the very enigma that propels the plot." (Long, P. Wall, T. 2009. p. 70).
The camera work in this scene is used in a way to show the power differences in gender. The four male characters walking towards the camera shows that they are the main center of attention trying to show their dominance whereas the female are on the side of the male characters dancing to loud music from the clubs, the females characters are represented as sexualized objects in the film and they are usually there to be viewed by male audiences, always there to be judged by the male viewpoint.
